Resources for Learning Cataloguing and Classification Standards.

An Annotated Bibliography.

Scope, Methodology, and Format.

Currently, only material related to AACR2, MARC 21, and other accompanying standards has been included. Please add content for other cataloguing and classification standards.

This bibliography is not necessarily intended be comprehensive. It is intended to include a large set of introductory guides with comments about their practical utility for learning cataloguing and classification without studying the rules in complete standards manuals. Although, standards manuals are included themselves as necessary resources. Brief comments accompany each citation to help to distinguish which is more or less helpful as a learning tool. If you wish to make the bibliography actually comprehensive, please do.

Citations within each section have been arranged somewhat in order of their supposed utility for the purpose of learning by gradual steps or some other logical sequence, therefore, alphabetising main entries has been avoided. – thd.

Please do not take the distinction between introductory, intermediate, and advanced especially seriously. Time has not been taken to draw very careful distinctions with respect to such arbitrary divisions and some material obviously spans multiple levels.

It should be evident that works which are introductory but present material in a superficial manner are not really helpful for learning much. Even superficial texts have not been excluded. The preference has been to comment on what is more or less helpful instead.

If you are not in New York City then call numbers presently included for some printed material may not be particularly helpful to you but I have retained them because they were helpful to me in writing comments and may still be in checking the resources again for comment revision. – Thomas Dukleth (thd).
